Blue Bunny® Ice Cream - Diet Ice Cream
Being on a diet used to mean cutting out everything that tasted good, especially yummy snack foods and freezer staples like ice cream. However, innovations in the ice cream business have made it possible for lighter, sugar free and low/no fat versions of favorite flavors to go hand-in-hand with watching the scale - and we don’t mean go up! Here at Blue Bunny, we believe there is an ice cream for every meal, event and phase of life, so we’ve made some especially for our friends who are dieting.
When purchasing a lighter option, it helps to know what all the words on the label mean. Is “Light” just part of the name or does it explain some of the ingredients? What are you really getting when you choose low-fat instead of non-fat ice cream?
Industry regulations dictate that certain phrases have to reflect specific ingredient ratios in a product. This is like the weatherman: he can’t say the temperature is freezing unless it really is below 32*. Certain terms can’t appear on the ice cream packaging unless they meet the following definitions:
Low-fat: 3 grams of fat per serving or less
Light Ice Cream: 50 percent less fat than any brand's regular ice cream
Ice milk: Can mean low-fat, light or both
Nonfat: Less than .5 gram of fat per serving
No sugar added: Neither ice cream nor add-ins can be sweetened with extra sugar; can use artificial sweeteners.
Lactose free: Breaks down sugar molecules to ease digestion. Not reduced-calorie or low-fat
We offer a wide selection of products in all of these categories. We have everything from
No Sugar Added Fat Free to
Light to No Sugar Added Reduced Fat.
While healthier snacking options can make dieting a little easier, portion control is a major key to succeeding at weight loss. Try playing little tricks on yourself to help curb cravings. Fill a tea cup with ice cream and eat it with a small spoon. Not only is this a pretty good way to measure a single serving, but the many little bites will make your treat last longer instead of a giant spoon.
Another helpful hint: ice cream with inclusions has around 120 to 130 calories per half cup.
Try hand-mixing your favorite plain, low calorie ice cream with a healthy inclusion of your choice.
A half-cup of strawberries has only 26 calories, and a half-cup of blueberries carries just 42 calories.
You can also add two tablespoons of nuts: walnuts bring only 36 calories to your snack while almonds are 66 calories.
Need another topping?
Light chocolate syrup also adds only 50 calories!
