Where did the BLUE BUNNY® name originate?
In 1935, Fred and Harry Wells could not use the Wells name to sell ice cream
since they had sold the rights to use the name to another company in 1928. So,
they held a "Name that Ice Cream" contest in The Sioux City Journal .
A Sioux City man won a $25 cash prize for submitting "BLUE BUNNY®." He not only
submitted the name but also the BLUE BUNNY® character; a form of which is still
being used today.
What is the feature flavor program and when are the flavors released?
BLUE BUNNY® Premium Critic's Choice and Limited Edition flavors are made in
limited quantities and debut periodically throughout the year wherever BLUE
BUNNY® ice cream is sold.
Where can I find BLUE BUNNY® ice cream and novelties?
You can find BLUE BUNNY® products in supermarkets, food service establishments
(restaurants, educational institutions, hospitals, etc.), convenience stores,
vending outlets (neighborhood Ice cream trucks and events) and military
commissaries. People are often surprised to find out that Wells' products are
not only found in the United States, but in markets all around the world.
What types of products do you offer?
The BLUE BUNNY® label carries a variety of products in both the frozen and fresh
dairy lines, including ice cream, frozen yogurt, sherbet, novelties, milk,
juice, sour cream, cottage cheese, snack dip and fresh yogurt.
In which countries are BLUE BUNNY® products sold?
Besides the United States, BLUE BUNNY® products are sold throughout the world,
including Latin America, Mexico and the Pacific Rim.
When was Wells' Dairy founded?
Wells' Dairy, Inc., was founded when Fred H. Wells made a $250 investment in
1913. That was the purchase price paid to Ray Bowers (a LeMars dairy farmer)
for a horse, a delivery wagon, a few cans and jars, and the goodwill of the
business. The original contract granted Fred H. Wells the milk distribution
route and guaranteed him a source of raw milk from Mr. Bowers' herd of 10 to 15
milk cows.
Since its beginning in Le Mars, Iowa (which is still the corporate home), Wells'
Dairy, Inc., has grown into a full-service operation selling ice cream and
dairy products across the country and around the world. Today, Wells' Dairy,
Inc., is the country's largest family-owned dairy processor.
Why is Le Mars the Ice Cream Capital of the World®?
Le Mars was officially designated the Ice Cream Capital of the World® by the
Iowa State Legislature in 1994. More ice cream is produced in LeMars by a
single company—Wells' Dairy, Inc.—than in any other city in the world. Come
visit the Ice Cream Capital of the World Visitor Center to see how we make our
ice cream, and try some yourself in our old fashioned ice cream parlor!
Does Wells' Dairy provide tours of their facilities?
Wells' Dairy does not provide facility tours but we do have a simulated factory
production line at our Visitor's Center located in Le Mars, Iowa, that gives
visitor's an idea of how ice cream is produced in our plants.
