Packaging Engineer

Wells Enterprises currently has a position open for a Packaging Engineer in the corporate center located in Le Mars, IA. Primary responsibilities of a Packaging Engineer include: provide support to the internal customer base of Wells Enterprises in: New Product Development (NPD), Plant troubleshooting on packaging materials, Specification Management, and Qualification of materials and vendors.

  • Capable of providing technical knowledge on the range of packaging mediums utilized at Wells. Understands and has the capability to perform physical and functional attribute testing on packaging material; and utilizes the software available for packaging development and analysis.
  • Has established relationships with key vendors and utilizes the contacts and material expertise of industry professionals as necessary in the daily work.
  • Understands the steps in NPD and the role and responsibility of the Packaging Engineer in the process. Is capable of providing the necessary packaging expertise to deliver to Marketing the design and specification required.
  • Is capable of developing and updating (as required) specifications for packaging into the business operating software (Oracle). Follows the Packaging development process as outlined.
  • Recommends packaging improvements that may lead to operational efficiency improvements, lower waste and reduce total costs.

Bachelor┬┐s degree in engineering is preferred. Packaging engineering degree is a plus with 0-5 years of on the job training is desired. Or the commiserative of 10+ years of on the job experience.

Process Engineer

We have an opening for a Process Engineer in the Engineering Workshop in Le Mars, IA with Wells Enterprises. The ideal candidate┬┐s job responsibilities would include: Provides process engineering expertise to transform innovative design and process improvements into reality, resulting in significant financial and/or strategic impact. This position is responsible for providing technical support, coordination, design, installation and start-up support of process engineering related projects assigned to the engineering workshop. These projects may utilize in-house or sub-contract resources.

Other job responsibilities include:

  • Provides leadership in the design, development, and implementation of basic and more complex process systems, including CIP and HTST. Analyzes technical problems and derives inventive solutions to significantly reduce cost and improve operations, system performance, and repeatability.
  • Prepares and manages technical and functional documentation including engineering drawings (P & IDs), Bill of Materials, specifications, and guidelines.
  • Frontrunner for the continuous improvement of process systems, driving to enhance system effectiveness and reduce cost. Works independently to develop innovative solutions to support NPD.
  • Supports BIST functionality by developing, testing, and designing process engineering concepts and technical solutions utilizing the best available technology. Incorporates best practices and appropriate technology to maximize reliability, flexibility, and efficiency.
  • Prepares a detailed scope/bid packages and cost estimates for both the mechanical installation and controls interface including all supporting documentation.
  • Serves as team member on capital projects, acting as a technical lead for process design. Leads and coordinates related construction activities, startup, operation and training. Supports Engineering Workshop projects, including process improvements and system replacements, by providing technical and administrative support and guidance to in-house and sub-contract fabrication personnel. Works to develop technical capabilities and work quality in sub-contract labor.
  • Works with Processing/CIP departments and other plant personnel to develop process systems improvements, including operating efficiencies, automation, and other cost savings measures.

The applicant will have a desired education or equivalent of experience of a bachelors degree in engineering or 7 years or more of applicable experience. Knowledge in dairy processes including HTST and CIP operation, passivation, vat pasteurization, liquification, membrane filtration, milk condensing, falling film heat exchangers, and separators is a plus.

This position is a pay grade 33 incentive band B, 34 incentive band B, 36 incentive band C, or 37 incentive band C based on experience and education.
