Safety Health Specialist

Wells Enterprises Inc. has an opening in the South Ice Cream Plant in Le Mars, IA for a Safety Health Specialist. Job responsibilities for this position include: A Safety and Health Team Professional that supports the effective implementation of the Wells' Enterprises Safety and Health program at the plant/area level. This role provides day-to-day oversight of Safety and Health activities for their respective facility/ department personnel. Position directs the fulfillment of the Wells' Dairy Safety Vision by implementing and maintaining programs, policies, and procedures that safeguard and support employees, visitors, and property of the Company.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Design and develop of work area processes and procedures, making health and safety recommendations accordingly.
  • Sustain Total Process Management (TPM), Engineering & Construction Projects, Process Safety Management (PSM), Workers' Compensation Program Development and Business Continuity-Crisis Management Programs.
  • Manage the creation, development, and delivery of value based Safety and Health Training and promote safety and health values or achievements by creating promotional campaigns that celebrate goal attainment.
  • Guide Plant or Area Management and Employees relative to the implementation and enforcement of safety and health concepts, processes, and procedures. Create and review policies, programs, and forms assuring compliance with best practice safety and health practices.
  • Design, implement, maintain, and lead facility specific programs, policies, and procedures that adhere to federal, state, and local safety and health regulations. Keeps up-to-date of any changes to laws and regulations that may negatively affect the organization and make safety and health recommendations accordingly.
  • Provide guidance, support, and coordination with Corporate Safety, Health, & Wellness Department with alleged Federal or State Safety and Health violations, current safety and health performance, or vulnerabilities that may result in disciplinary actions due to non-compliance with established company policies.
  • Effectively communicate policy recommendations, both orally and in writing to a broad spectrum of audiences as part of the employee safety and health education and awareness program.
  • Provides the expertise, guidance, and leadership for the development, implementation, and sustainability of a world-class safety, health, and wellness process that creates a "reduced-risk" environment at the plant area level.
  • Respond to emergencies (company-wide as needed) involving hazardous material releases, facility destruction, extreme weather, and property damage incidents; prepare reports of findings and submit recommendations.

Qualifications Include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety and Health, Business, Industrial Technology, Industrial Hygiene, or related disciplines; or the equivalent in education and work experience.
  • Knowledge technical experience in a related field and the ability to develop and understand safety and health systems.
  • Strong oral, written and presentation skills, interactive abilities, and effective organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to a diverse workforce.

Operations Supervisor - Nights

We currently have an opening for a Nights Operations Supervisor for the Extrusion area at our South Ice Cream Plant in Le Mars, Iowa.

This individual is responsible for day-to-day supervision of assigned teams of employees who perform specific tasks as part of operations (production, warehouse, freezer, etc.) activities in a food manufacturing environment. Responsible for communicating expectations, managing accountability and delivering desired results in the areas of safety, quality, delivery and cost. Assures employees complete tasks in accordance with relevant company and legislative food safety and food quality requirements.

Primary responsibilities may include:

  • Utilize and manage the necessary resources and processes across functions to achieve designated performance goals. Take ownership for the results of the operation from end-to-end by working within assigned team, as well as, across shifts and cross-functionally with departments that impact the desired results of the operation.
  • Administer standards of work to ensure employees consistently, safely and effectively perform assigned tasks and responsibilities in accordance with established SOPs/Standard Work and document as required. Take ownership of the training and qualification process of all direct reports.
  • Optimize labor schedules to ensure appropriate coverage in support of attainment goals and labor budget. Work proactively to minimize schedule changes and balance the needs of the operation.
  • Support and maintain a continuous improvement (CI) culture across assigned work teams; serve as a leader of change. Actively identify opportunities to optimize cost structure in the areas of materials, scheduling, labor, etc. managing daily improvement (MDI).
  • Monitor quality activities within the manufacturing processes to prevent quality failures and ensure compliance with plant manufacturing control programs (e.g., QMS) as well as company policies, food manufacturing GMPs, and relevant food safety regulations.
  • Communicate openly and effectively with assigned teams on a regular, frequent basis to ensure awareness and understanding of important information impacting the individual, team or operation.
  • Follow and enforce required safety policies, promote and acknowledge safe behavior and appropriately address safety-related concerns. Foster peer to peer safety accountability.
  • Develop and build capability of people as individuals and teams through a variety of techniques and tools focused on motivation, teamwork, mentoring and coaching. Drive individual accountability and ownership of results. Foster peer to peer accountability in the areas of safety, quality, delivery and cost.

Supervisor of Fluid Utilities (South Ice Cream Plant)

We currently have an opening for a Night Shift Fluid Utilities Supervisor at the South Ice Cream Plant in Le Mars, Iowa. Start times will vary between 5 p.m. and 7p.m. and typically have a 10 hour shift.

This individual reports to the Manager of Tech Services, and is responsible for supervising the execution of cost effective and timely maintenance work necessary for the operation of utilities systems and production operations. This includes directing, coordinating and supporting refrigeration maintenance personnel.

Primary responsibilities may include:

  • Proactively analyzes and forecasts department manpower vs. workload to determine most appropriate staffing levels, work schedules, and outsourcing requirements.
  • Monitors labor utilization variances to ensure maximum work effectiveness.
  • Work cooperatively with Fluid Utilities Planner. Responsible for establishing priorities for personnel and scheduling all planned and emergent work to individual technicians, ensuring that work is completed as efficiently as possible, maximizing employee productivity.
  • Follows up with completed and in-progress work to ensure that work is completed correctly, professionally, and on-time. Reviews completed work and work patterns by craftsmen to identify non-scheduled work that can be transitioned to proactive work.
  • Monitors failures to ensure that the root cause analysis program is implemented appropriately and effectively.
  • Works cooperatively with the Facility Refrigeration Engineer and PSM Coordinator in regard to PSM. Directly responsible for ensuring PSM compliance in regard to employee training, refresher training, SOP refresher training, and other tasks executed by refrigeration technicians.
  • Responsible for training personnel to ensure that they can execute required maintenance tasks and to meet regulatory requirements. Responsible for guiding and coaching refrigeration technicians through the skills progression process.
  • Coordinates on a day-to-day basis to ensure that customer needs are met. Coordination with other maintenance and operation teams, along with external resources will be required. This also includes ensuring that personnel respond to downtime calls, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring that systems are operating reliably.
  • Seeks out and develops opportunities to improve the reliability of plant assets and improve overall plant performance.

Qualification:

  • Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree or equivalent technical experience.

We have an opening for a Freezer Supervisor on the night shift. The Supervisor is responsible for day-to-day supervision of assigned teams of employees who perform specific tasks as part of the freezer operations. Responsible for communicating expectations, managing accountability and delivering desired results in the areas of safety, quality, delivery and cost. The normal schedule will involve working mostly evenings Sunday through Thursday; hours are typically 4:00 p.m. until 3:00 a.m., with rotating weekend work.

Primary responsibilities include, but not limited to:
